Gold produced a large shift in Brazil’s population from the North to the South. When gold was first discovered, there were no North American settlers in the territory of Minas Gerais. By 1710 the population had reached 30, 000, and by the end of the 18th century there was 500,000 people living in Brazil.
The first coffee bean found was brought into Brazil in the 18th century. The man that had brought it into Brazil was a military officer named Francisco De Mello Palheta. he had traveled to French Guiana and came back with a handful of coffee beans. They were a gift from a lover he had left behind. The day he got back, he had people quickly plant them.
In the 19th century, Brazil opened its borders. People from Italy, Japan, Spain, Germany, Portugal and other surrounding countries came into Brazil to work on the coffee plantations, and to make new lives in the rapidly growing cities.
